TechCrunch has a great post on a forthcoming tell-all book on MySpace by Wall Street Journal reporter Julia Angwin. A juicy detail: Co-founder Tom Anderson, everyone’s first friend on MySpace, has been lying about his age. Listed as 32 on his profile, it seems like he’s anywhere between 36 and 40. TechCrunch wonders, “I can’t decide if this doesn’t matter at all, or if it matters a lot.” I think it matters a lot.
First off, there’s the issue of people lying in their social network profile, which is a big deal if you’re an advertiser who’s trying to target people based on the information provided on these pages. It’s an issue I’m writing about for the next issue of AdAge.
Second, and sort of off-topic, but what’s the deal with men lying about their age? Not just aging empty suits who could easily be replaced by younger, cheaper and more with it-people. I’m talking powerful, important, not-easily-replaceable men, too. It happens all the time. They tend to be manicured and tanned, as well.

matt,
i’ll tell you why. men lie about their age b/c of what i have referred to in phamphlits as “pussy-no-balls-ification” . in other words, everybody knows you can’t trust a woman to tell the truth about their age. it’s just like asking a dog for its name. b/c women (and immigrants, bu thats a whole olther matter) are taking all the jobs from the men the men start to act like women. women lie about their age, so now the men lie about their age too. before u know it they’ll be using tampons and diaphragms.
