After discovering Martha Stewart’s presence on Facebook and MySpace, I wrote  a fairly skeptical piece about the likelihood–zilch, in my opinion-that Martha herself really checks in with these sites. It was prompted by all of the (rather depressing) comments, mainly on MySpace, addressed to her. I wrote, “Direct addresses to a multimedia icon like Martha via a website would seem to be about as effective as chatting up a can of Coke or a pair of Nikes….”

Seems my skepticism was misplaced. Her PR people were of little help, but industry sources now tell me Martha’s actual engaged with her social media and even files blog posts from her Blackberry. Then there was the reader reaction. One fan wrote me to say she knew–knew!–Martha is churning out Web 2.0 goodness like so much fresh-baked focaccia. How, I asked? Her reply:

Because I know Martha the person. I have met her and I talk with her on the radio and she has called my home before. It is her real Official page it is her there she comes and goes and yes she has help with the page.

I know some of her staff and when it’s Martha she writes you and when it her assistant she writes or one of her pr folks they all sign their names. Martha will write me from time to time usually in the middle of the night when she can’t sleep. or early morning. She is known to not sleep more then three four hours a night.

She is around as she has her Iphone and her black berry with her at all times and she often uses it in the car as she has a driver and she will check in with her my space and her face book, her office, check things online such as articles and her stock usually myspace more and she has a young pr guy who works for MSLO, helps her with the tech stuff posting the videos and such but she is a smart lady and knows a lot about computers and tech stuff herself. She is a HANDS on person.

If this kind of response is any indication, Martha, though only at the beginning of her social media push, is already bringing that offline community into the social networks with her. I stand corrected.
